Provenance: acquired directly from the artist's son

Exhibited: Royal Academy, 1957 (no. 1118)

Although clearly dated 1956, this appears to be a reworking of an almost identical pencil study that Woodford undertook at the British School at Rome in the mid-1920's, the pose probably taken from the antique.
