Provenance: The Artists Family
In a black receeding frame with gilded knull
This compostion is clearly indebted to Piero della Francescas Baptism of Christ (1450s, National Gallery, London). The National Gallery Baptism had a special significance for Monnington - it was, he later recalled, on first seeing this work as a young teenager, that he decided his vocation was to be an artist.
