This uncompromisingly structured self portrait demonstrates the two sides of Sorrell's nature in uneasy counterbalance. A rigorous and measured precision attempts to corral a fiery and forceful spirit.
The picture is remarkable for its careful analysis of planes and angular shapes.
The monochrome hand was probably intended to be 'tinted' following the procedure of Joshua Reynolds.
